I have a 5M Pentax staff which came with my laser level. On one side it has the traditional "E" scale increasing from bottom up, the scale being continuous between sections. On the reverse is a mm scale working from top down but is not continuous i.e there is a break in the scale at each section. Whilst use of the "E" is self explanatory I am confused as to how to use the mm scale. Any help appreciated.

Wen you say break do you mean there's a (for example) 50mm gap between marked sections but the scale doesn't take account of this. Those scales are mainly for optical dumpy levels although you can use them for easily marking accurate falls.

Yes the scale is not continuous and I have used it for accurate measurement of falls where a single section of the staff remains in use. It it laborious to add/subtract the difference between the sections of staff. There must be a valid reasone for the discontinuity in the scale and that the measurement commences at the opposote end of the scale to that of the "E" scale.

I think you've got a factory reject there it shouldn't be like that take it back and get a new one.

sinse reading this i had a look at my staff and its the same. theres a break embetween the different sections about 20 or 30 mm, surely there must be a reason.
