Hi,

I need to buy some rebar for some concrete steps. Before I order it, I have a few questions so that I look vaguely like I know what I'm ordering. Thanks for any help. (ps. I know how much rebar is required as the steps have been designed by an engineer for me)

1. I know that you can buy rods bent to shape, but do they bend mesh as well. I have a landing in the steps:

do I need to bend the mesh sheet to this shape, or do you just cut it into three and join it with wire?

2. When joining mesh, do you have to overlap it? and if so by how much?

3. Does mesh just come in standard sized sheets, or do you get them to cut it to size?

Stupid questions I know, but I have no experience of using it before.

mesh jointing is usually 10time bar dia. 10mm bar 100mm lap,
you should have a bending list from the enginer you then send it of fax it to a rebar supplier who will quote and cut for you, some companies bend mesh, i use the roe group for my steel they have a web site i belive .
from a supplier mesh is usually 2.4m X 4.8m

if you have never done it b4 it is not easy job,steel drawings are hard to understand if you have no one to understand it hope this helps MSH

Bent mesh is expensive. It would normally be cut on site and 'lapped': so, your sketch above would be three separate panels of mesh fastened to the shaped main bars (Shape 26 you have there, if you want to appear knowledgeable)

Mesh overlap is usually 300mm based on a 200mm mesh grid. It *should* be detailed on your steel drawing which are one of the greatest cures for insomnia known to man!

Mesh comes as 2.4 x 4.8 sheets, as Mark says, but you can have 'specials' if you have deep pockets.

Thanks Tony and MSH. The engineers drawings show bars used at the bottom of the set of garden steps, but don't show shaped main bars as Tony mentioned. The drawings just show that two layers of mesh are needed throughout the steps.

Can I use three sections as you suggest Tony, and just tie them to each other.

yes but ramsey surely 2 sections are like this

both sections having 50 mm of concrete cover ,then any extra rebar for the treads is tied to these

i have broke out reinforced concrete staircases and this is how i have found the rebar (bloody hard work)
