Hi all,
We have a tarmac driveway. To the side of this is a length of stoned area(approx 2'x20'). 2" of stones on top of 2" of hardcore and a membrane beneath.
Presumably we could not just take up the stones and tarmac over even if this part of the drive was hardly ever used for vehicles without the chance of the tarmac sinking?
cheers
Edited to add - looking at the faqs again I'm probably at least two inches short of hardcore?

If this concrete is connected to the side of the tarmac then what you could do is dig out a small section and expose the side of the tarmac and the subase. Then you will see how the tarmac drive was formed and if you want to extend the tarmac you just continue with the existing.

Thanks for the reply.
Dumb question! - dig out the from the stoned side to expose the concrete kerb and below?
thanks

Is there is an existing kerb or edging at the edge of the tarmac. This will take a bit of work to dig out due to concrete.
So if you are to extend the tarmac you will need a min of 100mm type1/hardcore then min 50mm dense tarmac and a wearing course of min 25mm

Yes there is an existing kerb.
The stoned area sits between ours and next doors driveways, edgings either side. The stoned area is our responsibility so it looks like we are at least two inches short of hardcore.
thanks for the advice.

If in any doubt excavate area and 100mm subase.
No point skimping as the tar will only sink/crack/fail in the furture.

Cheers, I think that's what we will end up doing rather than renewing twice!
