I have a pond 4m x 2m x 450mm and would like to know what to use to fill it in. Obviously a capping of topsoil will be required around 6-8 inch depth mark (is this correct). The area will be finished with a high quality turf. What shall i use as the main filler? Hardcore or just some cheap soil/shite? and shall i compact it?

Sub soil if you can get it but all your suggestions will work. If you use hardfill then use some membrane to separate the topsoil from it so that it doesn't migrate into any cavities. Compact in layers of 150mm.

Crusher run, 75mm or 50mm, laid in layers not exceeding 150mm and each layer thoroughly compacted before placing subsequent layers.

If this was a commercial project, we'd probably incorporate a few layers of geo-grid at 400-500mm intervals to reduce risk of differential settlement.
