Hi chaps.just a quick question.Can you substitute sharp sand with plastering sand for a bedding mix for paving?or is it not coarse enough.
I have seen on telly someone mixing sharp and soft together as bedding mix,opinions please.
Reason i ask is that i quickly learned to buy bulk bags as much cheaper and have wall to render and paving to lay but have limited space,if i have to use sharp sand for paving i will do.

if you are doing a professional job NO
if you had some sharp sand left over and put say 1 sharp 11 grit and and 2 cement in a mix i dont suppose it would hurt but better to do it right

Plastering sand is too soft, too fine and has too many rounded particles. If you had no choice, and it was being mixed with cement, and it was a patio or similar lightweight structure, then I;d possibly turn a blind eye to its use, but, as LLL says, the professional standard would have to be: no.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
I have seen mr walsh on telly reccomending a bedding mix of 3parts sharp 1 part soft and one cement,or do you think it better to use all sharp? I suppose the addition of soft sand would make it more workable?

Sorry Sean but it's illegal to mention that fella's name on this site could cause any number of accidents including heads exploding due to high blood pressure. Any of his telly shows are banned too.

If i watch T W on that programme ( a bit like Macbeth cant mention the name) my wife reckons that in my estimation the only thing they do right is...drink plenty o tae and go for a pint after a hard day. I say that if i done a job like they do, at the reveal i would be hiding to :laugh: :laugh:

and the programme is "ground farce"
planting may be ok but anyone who advocates 5 spot bedding on scraped off dirt needs shooting
plus how to trust a man who drinks pints of baileys?
strange really tw looks the part ,anyone else come across people who really look the part but cant do the job??

Every time I look in the mirror :laugh:
Problem with these shows is they don't have enough time to do anything properly it's all just garnished up for the cameras. I'm sure that they are more than capable of doing things properly but it's probably a case of 'needs must'.

my mate worked on "ruining rooms" and as soon as the camera got switched off "handy andy" had another 6 chipies helping him "cobble together" a cupboard etc.
it gives people the wrong idea

i was working at a school last year, and overheard a builder who turned up to price some paving, telling the caretaker he wasn't going to lay paving on wet mix because they "get sucked into the ground"?!
the mind boggles

So i take it that if i am going to lay paving i just use sharp sand and cement LOL. Thanks chaps.
