Could somebody explain to me what piles are ( the ground ones, not the rear ones), what do they do and how do you do them ?
thanks.

There are several methods for piling, many of them fairly recent methods which is why we are building houses on shite ground that we couldn`t previously construct on. Think of them as below ground stilts extending from your property foundations down to decent ground.
If your house has a foundation 1mtr deep on bad ground, and good solid ground is 6mtrs deep, the pile/s (concrete shaft/s) connects the two and halts the movement.
On a basic underpinning job you sink in a sectional steel shaft to the correct depth and then fill with concrete, then you bridge the piles supporting the foundation. On new build you sink the piles and build off them.
This is a basic description and somebody more qualified than myself will no doubt explain further.

on some piling jobs the concrete piles are prefabricated and are thumped in to the ground with a piledriver. That's why there is a lot of noise, vibration and sometimes damage to surrounding structures. with the in situ ones a pref-abed column of reinforced steel is lowered in and concrete pumped in. because a pile mat is needed to take the weight of the heavy rig the ground is made up with sound material. So the piles are often 2 3 metres or even higher than they should be. They are broken down to size on excavation to accommodate a capping beam, column bases etc; in the old ways these were broken by hand, now there are engineering procedures to prevent this ( which sometimes doesnt work , hence whitefinger. ) As Joe says " the piles carry the stresses down through the piles to some sort of a stable bed such as flint, rock etc :

it probably went walk about. the gist of it was that my brothers house is built on piles which are basically fossilised wood. Stronger than concrete and dont gat cancer iykwim:)
