Hi

Just found the site and am very impressed. I have a question. I'm looking at putting down a concrete road and am wondering what sort of base product would be best to use. I have currently been told I should be using type 1 or 6f2 ? I was wondering if someone could inform me. I would like it to be able to take a HGV as well if that makes any difference.

Cheers

The Sub-base page answered a lot of my questions about what to use and how ...

There's a wonderful publication known as SHW - Specification for Highway Works - and it categorises "hardcore" into all sorts of different types. The best stuff is Type 1, followed by Type 2. 6F2 (used to be SF2) is a 'selected fill'. It's good-ish, but not as good as type 1. It's the sort of material we'd use as a capping layer or for backfilling trenches.

If you want to run HGVs over the completed pavement, then Type 1 is what you really need.

75mm Type 1 is what you need - nice and strong when a big roller has been over it a few times.
