Hi all,
Not been on here for a while but i thought i would pose you all another brain teaser.
I am on phase 2 of my house build ( conservatory)
How do you set out footings so the building will be square against the original house wall ?
The area of the footings will be 5550mm wide by 4000mm
I have been running lines out all day but i dont know if its me or just the way the land looks, but thge lines dont look at 90 degrees to the house?
Any help would be much apreciated.

Pythagoras Theorum. see this page . It goes into great detail. If it doesnt look correct check it again. Getting it right now saves alot of headache, time and money later.

on your job mick i would go 3m out by 4 m along the house then measure 5m between these 2 points
the bigger the square the greater the accuracy
obviously your footings need to be 100mm outside the wall
another way of checking once you get your lines in is measuring the 2 diagonals,in a rectangle these must be the same,which according to my calculations will be 6.80073525m or 6.8 m for short 
like stuarty says get it 100% right before you start digging

yes its a special discount its called "the what its woirth discount" whereby you pay a fiver more than amazon,but at least you know the gaffer has a hot pot and a pint of ale on friday
i bought it from tony (which he signed as requested) and to be honest its worth £50

Cheers Guys,
I have done as you suggested, messed about a bit with the lines and have now managed to get the diagonals within 10mm of each other.
Is that close enough ? or do i need to be 100% I'm not sure how 10mm will effect the squareness of the build.

There can be some discrepency in the found itself, as the blockwork doesnt sit right to the edge of the 'crete. The blockwork must be spot on though.

if the diagonals are 10 mm out then it means tou have a very very slight diamond shape, TBh i would let 10 mm go on the found,but try and get the bwk spot on or the roof will be skew whiff

Back out in the rain tomorrow then ...
I think i will accept the dig as square enough and try and get the brickwork spot on as you say.
