I am considering laying a patio myself. There is a rather large tree next to the area I am going to use. To prep the ground and excavate the area I am anticipating many roots.
Three questions:
Can I work around the tree?
Should I cut down the tree and if so will I have to wait a period to allow the roots to stop growing?
Would a deck be a better idea since I will just have to pour four footers or will I have the same problems?
Thanks in advance.

you can cut down the tree if you want to, but it depends on size, and whether your allowed. You can build up the area if you dont want to chop it down, maybe only a few inches, just one step or so.

Footings wont do much, tree roots in time will damage the footings and cause movement. If you cut the tree down, dig out as many roots as you can find.
