I need to lay a path 35metres across a field ofclay soil that gets quite boggy. I also need to do it cheaply. It will be largely foot traffic, ped and pony with ocasional use by a ride on mower.

I am planning on using road planings at 1.5 metres wide and 100mm depth, laid straight to the soil.

Is going to work, it only needs to be passable, aesthetics aren't an issue? And what weight of planings do I need for this, it's 5.25 cubic metres?

Or is there a cheaper way of doing this?

Had to do very similar here about 10 yrs ago - (we are in chalk though) - beg, borrow or steal a mini-digger - I scooped Im depth - hardcore - whack-it - then 150mm of crushed stuff for surface - whack-it touch wood it's worked - even had some 8-wheelers up here without probs - as always the problem is what to do with the spoil...... can you do some creative landscaping? - sounds like you have some space.

ps- how fat is the pony?

Planeings will work fine but make sure you vibrate them. If you were taking vehicles over then i would put down vibrated harcore first folowed by planeings

I wouldn't use planings full stop. They degrade; they pollute the adjacent land; they go mushy unless they are properly drained.

Given you need on 5m³ (12 tonnes), I'd spend a few quid extra and use a proper crushed aggregate. Not necessarily Type 1, but a 50mm crusher run or even a crushed concrete would be ideal for this sort of task.
