I am thinking of building a retaining wall, using up right sleepers 1.0m high above ground level with 500mm in the ground.See Example

I will be using 1.5m x 250mm x 125mm or 75mm but im not sure which thickness. I would like to go for the 75mm thick sleeper (Cheaper) but not sure whether it would be strong enough. Which should I use? any help will be greatly appreciated.

I recommend going for the 5''. The 3'' is not worth bothering with.

With only 1 metre of upstand, you could use the 75mm timbers, but they'll always look "thin" and give the impression that you've skimped on the job. For the authentic 'sleeper' look, you need the 125mm units.
