Hello,
I have only recently discovered your site, and have found in very informative and helpful.
My question is; in front of my house was a gravel driveway that the previous owner had spread soil over and grew a sort of lawn.
I am planning to regravel it. So far I have put in railway sleepers to make raised beds, and removed all of the vegetation, and some of the old gravel. Now I think that I should "blind" the area with 2" deep sand, then put a membrane over it, then put the new gravel down. Does this sound like to right way to go? The surface that I am now starting from is very solid and compacted.

sand ? why not 100mm compacted Type 1 Mot this should give the job a greater life span and put the membrane under the Mot last thing you want is bits of membrane showing through when the kids wheelspin off the drive.

Thanks for that advice. I am not planning to use it as a driveway anymore, it will be more like a low impact pathway. I suppose i am turning it into a small garden area really, only getting walked on.

Full details on construction of gravel drives or paths is given on the main website. Sand as a sub-base?? Never! Read the main website and learn summat!

Hiya,
Since I posted this question I have had a good read through of your site, and found it very useful, and i'm pleased to say I have learned something.
I have just about finished the job, which was very easy once I knew how to do it.
just waiting for the gravel to be delivered.
Now i'm thinking on to the next job, terracing a sloping garden.
