I have bought an old rundown watermill which is situated at the bottom of a steep winding farm track. The track seems to have a good foundation but when we get heavy rain the track acts as a dry river bed and water cascades down the track washing it away. I intended to divert the water in to a gulley and have started that job. However this track is quite long and i could not afford to concrete it. I had thought of buying reuseable concrete sleepers to edge the track and then in fill, about 9inches of road plannings from Tarmac and then using a wacker plate compact the lot. What do you think. Any advice would be welcomed

Thanks
Martin

Road plannings will wash away as the unpredictable grading range can't guarantee sufficient fines to bind everything. If you used a double-drum vibrating roller there's a chance you'd get a better 'bind' than you would with a plate compactor, but I;d still be reluctant to use planings on a steep trackway. You'd be much better off using, say, 150mm of 100mm crusher run topped with 100mm of 40mm crusher run or DTp1, if the budget can stretch that far.
