what dia and thickness of steel galvanised tubing would you use for handrails? or what else could i use? Does any one have a spec on handrails?

Take a look at http://www.keeklamp.co.uk/ it seems to be used by a lot of local authorities and the like.

Handrails are usually 45-50mm dia steel tube or wooden pole set at 900-1000mm above the pitch line of a flight of steps or a ramp and 45mm clear of any wall. See Document M of the Building Regs for clear, concise spec. This is a crown copyright document so no-one is allowed to re-print it.
