We are thinking of having our existing concrete paths and patio removed and replaced with Lonstone Old Chelsea paviours. Ground would be dug out to obtain correct levels etc.
We seem to have variation in what kind of material will be used as the sub base. The quote that seems reasonable uses Type 1 Road Stone that will be compacted ( mechanically). We are not familiar with this material. Can anyone offer any advise on whether this is suitable .
Alternative quotes state scalpings and or aggregate ( I think this could be anything).

Thanks for any advise :O

Oh dear - why not try looking at the main website, as suggested at the top of the page, where you'll find Type 1 sub-base material mentioned on almost every page?

Here's a tip - start with this page and it's also well worth having a read of the FAQ that's linked from that page.

S'not rocket science, is it?

I'm looking into some way of giving an "Eejit Warning" to posts that make me want to cuss.

It's stated in the bumpf that's supposed to be read when people sign-up to post, and there's the "Read This First" message, not to mention the "Have you read the main website?" link at the top of every page, but still some folk insist on ignoring all of that and asking the most gormless questions rather than make the effort to find the answer for themselves in the rest of the website. What more can I do? :(

Put two buttons at the bottom "I am not an eejit and have read the main website" and "I am an eejit and have not read the main web site". Then make sure both buttons take 'em to the main web site.

Thank you for your comments. Perhaps if you made your site even more Idiot proof ( I assume that you are not all able to spell.
Your search facilty does not cover the phrase I entered. As always those who are in the know can be very smart. Type 1 sub base does not exactly match the phrase type 1 road stone. Hence the request for a reasonable response, it is obviously too much to ask.

Ooooh!

Did you try the site map? The index? The aggregates page? The sub-base pages? The phrase "Type 1" is used time and time again on all of these pages, and many more besides.

You can't expect the answers to pop up in front of you - you need to make a bit of effort. After all, I can't do everything and I can't be expected to anticipate every possible query. If you'd bothered to look at the main website, it is damn near impossible to find a page that doesn't mention Type 1 material!

What gives you the right to expect me to continually work to make the site "even more idiot proof". The experienced contractors, DIYers and fellow paving afficianodos that provide free and impartial advice via The Brew Cabin are entitled to expect those users posting questions to at least have made a bit of an effort, to have checked the main website, used the site map, tried the index page. Did you try searching for "scalpings" or even "aggregates"? Or did you simply decide you couldn't be arsed?

If you'd asked about a material that's a little bit unusual, a little bit different, a little bit out of the ordinary, you'd have been answered without further ado, but Type 1 material is in the top 4 materials mentioned on the site, along with sand, concrete and cement.

You were provided with an answer, but that's not enough: you feel it's necessary to whinge about an imperfect search facility! I'd suggest it's YOUR ability to search and to follow basic netiquette that's at fault, not my website.

I think it was you and your colleagues who started to hurl the proverbial. If your industry was to use a standard reference for material then maybe confusion would not reign.
Type 1 is used in a lot of situations; I actually read your site very thoroughly and was still unsure on the exact reference that I posted. It would seem that you and your colleagues are a long way short of 'customer' tolerance.
Thankfully I have found an alternative source where I can get a very courteous and informed reply.

Well, lets hope idiots than cannot be bothered to search will also follow suit.

Tony's site is the best I have ever seen when it comes to paving. There is not one piece of information missed out.

You just have to search!!!

Well, it takes all sorts, I suppose. No-one else has ever pulled me up about not being able to find a reference to Type 1 on the website, so I'll have to assume lobs is the exception, rather than the rule.
