Due to a "change of plans" by the Client, I've been left with a huge pile of loose DoT Type I limestone which I no longer need. I need to lay an area of concrete for a small residential car park at the front of the building... and I'm loathe to grab up the limestone and move it elsewhere due to the transport costs.

If I mix, say, 7 parts of Type I to 7 parts of sand and gravel mixed/20mm ballast to 4 parts of OPC, would this make a reasonable concrete on which I could then add a more conventional concrete mix with finer aggregates for the finished surface ?

Any comments would be very welcome.

Cheers,

Barry.

What depth of bastard mix do you propose and what depth of 'proper' mix would be used to top it?

If this was going to be summat like 50-75mm of the bastard mix with 100mm of 30N concrete over the top, that shouldn't be too much of a problem. It's the overall strength of the completed structure that's imporatnt, and with this being a car-park rather than a private 1-car driveway or shed base, you can't really afford to cut too many corners.

Surely you'd need some of the DTp1 as a capping/improvement/sub-base layer beneath the proposed concrete slab?
