I have read the informative website but remain confused!
I have a garage built 6m x 12m and I need to lay a concrete floor. I am thinking of about 125mm thick and in 3 bays. The ground in hard sand and I have heaps of excavated sand which I was going to compact to bring the floor to the right height. Is this OK? Or do I need some form of hardcore?

Don't build-up levels using sand - if you have to regulate or build-up, use a coarser granular material as sand can be unstable at depths of more than around 50mm.

It would be best if you could excavate to formation level in the 'hard sand' and then cast the slab onto that.
