Do they charge by the job or by the metre, if so how any idea how much and what for ?

Depends on who you talk to, and what type of fencing is involved. Most contractors for residential fencing work have a charge per section, subject to a minimum charge. It doesn't matter whether it's a full 1.85m section, or a cut-down bit that's only 300mm long, you pay for the full section.

The short answer is to ask a number of contractors in your areea and see what they say!
