Can anybody recommend some drainage rods ? I have a few very sturdy old ones I inherited but the cheap ones available at builders merchants appear to be next to useless and very weak and brittle.

I'm not sure there is a particular brand that I could recommend, as such. I have a huge bundle of rods that I've amassed over 50-odd years including several bamboo rods that were my father's, so probably 60-70 years old, and all seem perfectly fine.....but no brand name.
Were I in the market for new rods, I'd not be looking at a Builders' Merchant or a bargain tool shed, but at a specialist construction tool supplier, such as, say, Parkers, or Axminster. In most cases, these types of suppliers focus more on quality than cost, so you usually pay that bit more bit there less risk of your kit being some cheap plasticly shite manufactured to maximise profitability for the retailer over serviceability for the user.

All depends on your budget and how much use you expect to give them!
