Looking for help (direction)

Installed a large climbing frame in the garden. The grass is getting ruined by tiny feet so I'm looking to lay some bark but have 2 questions.

1) Do I need to lay any fabric under the bark first (assuming I remove top layer of grass) and lay bark to required minimal depth

2) I live in a clay-ey area (looks like many people do) - do I need to consider any drainage solution "under" / "around" the fabric / bark to stop it pooling on the fabric

1 - you need a sub-base, for sure, but not necessarily a membrane

2 - A free-drainaing sub-base, then - Type 3 or similar

See.....
