I have a long drive covering 360 m2. It is Tarmac over a concrete base (about 35 years old). I can't afford to have cobble sets and I'd like to take off the tarmac and have gravel as a cheaper option.
I know this is not recommended as the gravel would move too much but....
In order to stop movement how about putting a layer of compacted Type 1 (approx 50mm?) on the existing concrete then lay over an A98 steel mesh, then a further layer of Type 1 (approx 50mm) compacted and then gravel on top (approx 15mm). The steel mesh could be supported on pieces of paving along the edges, as necessary, and concreted in at the four corners.
Might this work??
Anyone????

the steel will do no good in the slightest ,100mm type one would be ok'ish ,not a ideal way off doing it,you will need somewhere in the region of 60-70 tons off type 1,
best answer would be rip concrete out and type 1 the driveway then gravel ,120-150mm type 1

If you were to overlay type 1 and gravel on the concrete you may need some way of removing the water as it will not percolate/drain sideways through the type 1. A fin drain would be the best solution but I'm with MSH on ripping the concrete up. If you can hire a small crusher then you could save a significant amount of cash by recycling your concrete into type 1.

as Type 1 is generally 40 or 50mm Crusher Run, then you have to lay it at least 100mm.
if the existing drive has a concrete base and you are concerned about preventing movement, then go for the 2 recommendations above and look to remove the base and start afresh.

Get rid of the tarmac, then rip up the concrete and crush it using a rental machine. Re-lay it and supplement with Type 1 if necessary. Fully compact. Lay thinest possible layer of shingle over the top and compact again. Solves the percolation problem, lowest material cost, lowest disposal cost. Job's a good 'un.

You could overlay your concrete with Ronadeck Fast Grip:

there are some types of gravel that bind very well.
this all sounds too complicated to me- i'd just go for red chippings- we made a drive in this and its amazing how well it binds. i think it was from Travis Perkins- just check a few options out first and lay a membrane 1st.
i'd never have a pea gravel drive but the chippings drive we laid was a great surface.
