What would be a fair rate to expect to be paying for a small bore drainage gang (labour only/ sub contractor) for work in the midlands.

How many men would be in the gang and would the contractor they are working for be supplying excavator and laser levels, and
manhole boxes etc.

You said it yourself "labour only" ???
Can't say how many you need in the gang but at least 4 depending on how much an area your given.
There are a lot of contractors offering different rates. Could be as little as £120 up to and above £180.

While a 4-man gang would be ideal, many operate as 3-men gangs, which means one man as a ganger and two donkeys. Without involving any plant more complicated than a grafting spade (so no lasers, drag boxes, excavators, etc.) such a gang outside of Lower Britain would probably command 500 quid/day for smaller jobs, maybe only 350 quid/day for long-term regular work.
