Sorry if this is war and peace, please bare with me this is new ground for me. I'm wanting to dig up my old concrete single drive and replace with block paving including widening it suitable for two vehicles. Total area of new drive will be 38m2, with approximately the same area 38m2 left for lawn. In the middle of the lawn area there has always been a Manhole cover for a Surface Water Drain from the downpipes of the house and house next door. We live in a clay area of soil so have dug a hole 450 x 450mm, filled it with water and the level has dropped about 12 inch over a 24 hour period (plus it did rain overnight).

So my question is, would I be ok to put a linear drain to a soakaway in the lawn (over 5 metres from the house but less than a metre from pavement) and connect an overflow from this soakaway to the surface water drain in the middle of the lawn, without needing any planning or council intervention?

Yes: that is completely compliant with the nonsense regulations which no-one enforces any longer.

Thanks for the reply. Am I to assume that I don't really need to put all that drainage in as no-one would check :;):

I do intend sell the house in the near future so is it best to play safe?

Chuck the smallest soakaway in and connect the overflow to the storm drain, all will be well.

Yes: it's increasingly the sort of thing that surveys pick up on in the hope of forcing a modest price reduction by the vendor.
