Could do with a photo or some more info Izzie but without seeing it I'd guess a gravel trap with perforated piping to take the water away.

Its on a slight slope, I thought of putting down some hardcore as its on private land and the owner won't do anything about it.

I'm sorry Izzie you're still a bit cryptic for me is the water from a field onto your yard or does it come off other ground onto yours then onto the yard. What sort of surface is the yard and how much water are we talking about is and is there anywhere to run a drain to. Take a photo and email it to me.
