Due to the foul smell I decided to investigate! Can anyone tell me how I can break off an old clay connector (looks a bit like an hour glass!) without breaking the clay pipe beneath so i can fit a universal connector to plastic?

you can't break off anything, it has to be cut with a stihl saw, angle grinder, or a set of pipecitters. Sounds like a junction....yes/no? Not much information, maybe you could post a photo.
