I HAVE A 1930s DETACHED HOUSE AND AM CURRENTLY RECONSTRUCTING THE DRIVE. ADJACENT TO THE MANHOLE COVER IS A SMALL METAL PLATE WITH HOLES IN IT WHICH IS CONNECTED TO THE MANHOLE VIA A SMALL LENGTH OF PIPE. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY AN AIR VENT. CAN I DO AWAY WITH THIS VENT OR DO I HAVE TO RETAIN IT. IF THE LATTER APPLIES IS THERE ANY COVER I CAN PURCHASE SUCH AS THE ONE I HAVE FOR THE MANHOLE COVER IN WHICH I CAN UTILISE THE BLOCK PAVING I AM USING.
THANKYOU.

Is there a soil pipe stack vent on your property at all? You know, the one right up on top of the roof. If so I think you could loose the driveway vent entirely.

It sounds like a bugen trap in which case it shouldn't be discarded. They have a u bend in them to catch the smell but this can sometimes block so it's best to have access to it. They are pretty ineffective so you don't need them as a vent but you can cover them with a 300x300mm recessed cover.
Can't see it from my house
