Hello,
I am a new member. I really hope that someone can give me some guidance on my drainage issues. My first problem is the fact that under what little topsoil I have is all the backfill from the construction of my house. I have several large rocks coming to the surface. Anyway, I also have a retaining wall in my backyard. Grass will not grow, I have some kind of black oily film on my soil, the bottom of my wall appears to be eroding the soil away, the top won't drain well and appears to be coming from my neighbors. If I dig my test hole I will not be able to go four feet without hitting rocks and "boulders." The water appears to be standing just on my side of my privacy fence. This area is not level. Have I given enough information for anyone to maybe understand what is going on? If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Thank you!!

Could be there is no drainage behind the wall and water is standing. You need to get out as much rubble as you can to allow for a good depth of topsoil. How long is your garden , will you be able to fit in a soak away, or attenuation tanks? They need to be 5 metresaway. Also you need to discuss this with your neighbour and the two of you may resolve something. You will almost definitely need to introduce some sort of drainage. We await your photos.
