Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and am wondering if someone can help me? I have had a new patio laid and due to the slope on the garden the builder informed us that we should insert 'drainage channels' under the patio doors. There are two drainage channels (black narrow grids running the length of two sets of patio doors. The builder (without consulting me) has fixed something he calls a rodding eye, slap bang in the middle of my new patio - this is annoying and unsightly and i am wondering if it can be either removed (how necessary is this as I assumed that water from the gullys would be channeled directly into the down pipe chamber (sitting between the gullies as they meet at the corner), or if he could somehow extend the length of the pipe work on the rodding eye by adding an extra metre of pipe so that it can be sited in the grassy edge of the patio. I would be very grateful if some one could advise me. Thanks

generally speaking rodding eyes have to go over the run they are intended for rodding
If it is sited too far away then it could make it difficult to rod
a picture would be handy

You should have been offered a recess tray cover as an alternative to the standard RE cap.

Hi, thank you for your advice. I have posted an image and added some brief text of what i think is the correct terms for the items shown. I like the idea of having a recess tray if it can't be moved. you can't see from the image but the grass verge is approx 1.20mtrs to the right of the image, but maybe it is just too far away to be re sited there as you suggest it may be.rodding eye position

Hi, Sorry about that, I took it down to edit the photo today, it is back up now
I had a look at some of your other topics and have seen that many people do not need rodding eyes when they have drainage grids installed. How essential is the rodding eye? We have had other building work done and the building inspector needs to come out to check everything, so it is important that I don't remove it if it is 'necessary' thanks for your help again.

if the building inspector has to see it chances are it IS important
builders dont normally put stuff in unless they have to,its a waste of time and money otherwise

Its hard to say from the photo if its needed or not, the `inspection chamber` is a roddabe gully which pretty much acts as a rodding point. There could however be a seperate foul system that the offending rodding eye serves.
So without ripping the lot up to reform the drainage you can either install a recess tray as Tony says, flag over the rodding point (never a good thing) or strategically place a flower pot over it.
