Firstly just wanted to say hello.
fantastic web-site congratulations! stumbled over it by chance and dont think i'll look back. my first question will be, I've dug a hole in my drive to intercept my drains and added in a trap to catch my rainwater from garage, now thats all done and tested can I ask is it ok to now backfill the hole with ballast alone upto just below level or should i use a concrete mix? the earth and rubble i dug out previously went in the skip which has now gone!!!!! any advice would b great thanks in advance TelJol.

how much cover will you have to the surface of the drive? if its only shallow then it will need to be encased in concrete.
if you have plenty of cover (over 900mm) then some pipe bedding around the pipe (6mm etc) and then come up in 250mm layers of type 1 compacted will be ok.

Thanks 4 quick reply, my hole depth is only 600mm deep from drain to drive surface level! i've bedded my piping on a shingle bed and was going 2 cover the pipe in shingle completely?? If i've read ur post correctly u say I should now pour a complete hole of concrete because im under the 900 mark then replace my blocks that i had taken up?? thanks again

nope
you need to create a concrete box around the pipe that will carry the weight of the drive. then come up in your type 1
its on that page i pasted the link to
make a good strong mix with small aggregate 6mm-20mm and encase the pipe underneath as well. any joints should have some expansion material around them as per diagram.
