Hi all, have been a "lurker" here for a while but have now joined up. An unbelievably good website Tony, thanks on behalf of all who come here.

I've had my own garden contracting business for 6 yrs now, and for the last two we've been doing more and more landscaping - fencing, decking, terraces and the likes. Self taught with common sense+help from here, I'm learning all the time. In business I pride myself on not having callbacks or complaints so I usually end up costing myself money on a job by going that extra 2 miles (!) - reputation is everything, I don't advertise, and don't intend to (hopefully).

There are two jobs in question which I could do with advice for if I can be so cheeky to ask. By coincidence I guess I have not had to construct any special drainage for the jobs we've already done, utilising natural falls onto borders, existing gullies, french drains etc.

Job 1) 22 sqm Bowlands Millstone. A 1 in 40 slope away from the house culminating with a finish point 45/50mm below lawn level - I intend to lay a clarks drain linear (which I have in "stock") at flag height with lawn retention on other side using concrete edging/gravel boards or the likes. I don't have a lot of room at the end of the run to put a soakaway miles away from the trap outlet - but does it need to be miles away anyway? Is already 4.5m away from the house. I notice from the site that osmadrain standard 4" orange has been used - does it connect to clarks system ok or do I need an adaptor/sleeve? Soil is very free draining (so much so there's an irrigation system there).

Job 2) An 8m x 2.1m Bradstone Old Riven patio with a 6 course retaining wall (with weep pipes) opposite to house which is a mid-terrace with no boundary walls as its at an old folks community type place - at the moment its got a 1ft 10mm pea french drain at the base of the wall - customer a lovely old boy who is quite unsteady on his feet so I want to replace with linear channel but I have nowhere to soak it away to (no rainwater system as he's in the middle, and property on either side has existing patio with french drain kind of affair). Only suggestion made to me so far was to chop out a section of the channel underside and gravel underneath like a kind of soakaway maintaining the upper section and grid. Any suggestions would be heartily appreciated.

I'm a member of many forums, and like to think as I learn I give something back, hopefully the same here.

1) You'll be able to connect, no problem.

2) Without seeing the job, it's difficult to pass comment - I take it there is no storm water drainage nearby at all?

Regarding problem 2, if a "French Drain" is coping at the moment, that would suggest a linear channel linked to a soakaway would also work. While knocking out a section of the base and laying the channels directly over the existing "French Drain" should work, I'd still be tempted to create a new soakaway 'just in case'.
