My patio needs to be terraced because of the slope of the garden. There will be three tiers. They do not adjoin to the house in any way so there is no dpc problem. Which way should the gradients be, forward, backward or sideways? Whichever way it goes, I expect to put a water collection point in but I think steel-topped drains may spoil the look of the paving (Injun sandstone). Are there alternative ways of finishing them off? Garden is good old Buckley clay.

In such a situation, you can slope the paving in any way to best suit the layout.

Alternatives to linear drains? Gullies and channels, collector land drains, slot drains....have a look on the main website.
