Hi, I have recently moved to a house with approx 2.5 acres of garden and a further 5 acres of woodland. The garden has been wet for the past 3 weeks, has dried out sufficiently to cut but with the rain over the last couple of days we are raising a small paddie field at the back of the house we have so much surface water. I have looked at the house plans and the house was built in 1972 and drawings indicate arrows to soakaways for surface/rainwater. I have no idea where the soakaways are or what condition. Does anybody have any clever ideas as i would hate to start carving up the garden

i would guess the soakaways are silted up now
you could plant water loving plants at the perimeter i.e willow
or get a decent suds system installed,but it will mess up your garden short term

If its on the drawing it should be a properly constructed chamber. Try and locate it and have a look in, if its full when it rains it will be silted up and need a " soup sucker" to pump it out and pipes cleaning.
maybe they just omitted to insert the drain altogether? Hopefully its just silted up, but how is access for clearing if it is?
