I am wanting to lay a gravel driveway, i will be laying approx 100 mm of subbase & my question is do i need to lay matting under this to surpress weeds & soil infusion or will the compacted base be enough to prevent these issues? thanks.

A compacted base in many instances will not be enough to stop these issues, so a quality geotextile such as Terram build A, In my opinion would be a worthwhile investment, about £75 for a 2.5m x 50m roll. Although it wont stop bloody weeds self seeding on the surface.
cheers
