Hi All

While digging up the old flagstones down the alleyway along the side of my house, I noticed that the underground clay pipe that connects to the toilet down pipe was damaged. It seems that when the old flagstones were layed the one adjacent to the downpipe was wedged in so hard against it that it crushed the flange of the clay pipe.

Anyway, I've recovered all the broken bits and would like to stick them back and then seal up the joint where the cast iron down pipe meets the clay one. Can anyone recommend a suitable adhesive to stick the clay pipe and what would be the best way to seal up the joint?

Thanks
Neil

It sound as though the collar of the pipe work has fractured and broken

You could just surround the pipe work in concrete or mortar, better still use a water proof tape such as Denso to seal the joint before using the above.

If there is major water loss then a full pipe repair is required

You could use a flexseal/ Bandseal coupling??

Do that, and you might aswell do a full repair.

DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH YOU HAVE EXPOSED, BUT A FLEXIBLE RUBBER COUPLING WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM EASILY. CUT OFF THE DAMAGED COLLAR AND REPLACE WITH EQUIVALENT COUPLING. JOB DONE

That was my thoughts too Matt, no messing about trying to stick broken collars and you are gauranteed a seal too.

Hi All,

It turned out that the damage to the mouth of the clay pipe was worse than I first realised, so I ended up using a flexible coupling which sorted it out brilliantly.

Many thanks for all your help.

Cheers
