Sloping a patio towards the house - Which way should water flow

Foul and surface water, private drains and public sewers, land drains and soakaways, filter drains and any other ways of getting rid of water.

I'm about to have a new patio laid at the back of my house. All the advice in laying a patio suggets that the patio should fall away from the house so that water runs away from it. But because there is a drain from the kitchen right outside the kitchen wall, some of the contractors that have quoted for the job recommend running it towards the house, lay a channel along the house, so that rain water either goes in to the drain or in to something at the side of it that sounds like a small tank. Does this make sense?

if ground naturally runs towards the house a linear channel drain can be utilised effectively to the existing drain, alternatively run the water to a soakaway away from the property. :)
