I want to lay about 40 metres of fairly substantial mowing strip, consisting of 3 rows of Strata red granite setts each 100 *100.
At the moment I am thinking to use a base 42 cm wide (3*10 for the setts, 2*1 for the gaps and 2*5 for the haunching over the sub grade and then a 10:1 bedding mix with haunching either side to half the depth of the setts. As, for some reason, pointing seems to be a skill completely beyond me, I intend to use Romex Easy as a jointing medium.

Does this sound OK?

I have two questions though. I assume that I will need to create some form of "dam" to contain the Romex in the vertical joints above the haunching?. Any suggestions as too how to do this.

The second is a bit more complex, in some parts of the mowing strip I would like a kerb to stop soil from flower beds spilling over the strip. The best idea I have come up with is to use 200 *100 Strata setts mounted vertically, but I'm a bit concerned about the skill and accuracy needed to make these look neat. Also they will need vertical pointing and as I have already mentioned I am pointing challenged!. Any suggestions or alternatives would be welcomed.

No need to 'dam' the Romex Easy: it's damp-ish (well, resinous really) and sticky so it tends to stay put. The slurry-type products are best if dammed using sand or similar.

For the retaining kerb, why not use a complementary granite flagstone, laid on edge and butt-jointed to eliminate any need for pointing? Alternatively, Romex manufacture a version of Easy that is used for re-pointing walls: could be ideal for the point-a-phobic DIYers out there. Somewhat unsurprisingly, they've named it Romex Wall

Tony, Many thanks for this - the time you take to help DIY'ers is very much appreciated.

A good idea about the flagstone, that's what I will do on the straight bits. But I will try edge mounted setts on the circular bits and see how I get on.

But Romex..... I'm getting the impression that they do not want to sell it. I got the number for Roy from the main site - that is now giving number unobtainable. E Mailed the German head Office - no Reply.

Compare and contrast with Easipoint. Unbelievably helpful, patient and courteous on the phone. In view of my skill level they suggested Easipoint standard rather than Settpoint and were able to point me in the direction of a local supplier.

No doubt I will be requesting help again when all the bits arrive.
