Hi,
Well done on the site, in all my research i've not found a more informative site.
I'm planning to lay a patio and path for the first time, having never done any work like this before i could do with some advice.

I have a downwards sloping garden, it is not a steep gradient but i belive it would be enough to create puddles. I was thinking that a linear drain placed next to the house would solve this problem, and also give me good drainage for when i want to clean the patio area. Is there any issues with placing this next to the brickwork? I also dont have a rainwater drain in my garden, it is about two inches over the fence. Do i have any rights to use this drain and how easy would it be to connect the linear drain to it?
Sorry if this is all a little vague it's my first house and i'm learning as i go.

if the garden slopes towards the house you will need a linear drain connected to a suitable soakaway or drain

Do you have a drainpipe at the back of the house going into a gulley? Can you discharge the linear drain into that or not?

Aco channels or similar against the house is fine - I guess your DPC is at the correct level (i.e - above where your patio's finished level is?)

Otherwise your only plan of action is to dig a soakaway - you'll need a mini digger.....

Thank you for your quick response's and advice.

The trouble is that the downpipe is located in my neighbours garden, its about two inches over the other side of the fence. Ideally i would like to drain in there, but i have a feeling he willl not approve. I was wondering if i had any right to drain into it, and if so would it be at all possible to do from my side of the fence.

You can ask the neighbour if they would be happy for you to extend their drain line into your own property and for you to connect up once you're on your own side of the fence. If they say no, cross them off your xmas card list and find a site for a soakaway, minimum 5m from the house.

Aslong as it is done properly......you'll be fine.

No inspection required as it is a private sewer and the patio work is not subject to BCO oversight.
