The Brew Cabin

Hi there, we acquired a cabin in the mountain in Quebec. The cabin is on a 2.5 acres woodland, is hillside to the east side of a mountain of 480meters and it has a 8x4 meter pond behind the house. The water runs down the mountain side and waterlog our only flat area that is 10meter wide and then fill the pond that in turn has an exit pipe of .5 meter where the water runs out into a ditch.
I read the site and decided to try the trench drain method which makes sense to me. My brother thinks we should try first an easier method: changing the exit pipe to a bigger .75meter and putting the pipe .5meter deeper. His theory is to lower the level of the pond and the bigger exit pipe the land will drain better.
Can anyone advise me of the best way to go about. It would be too sad to loose that flat area of the property. Some stepping stone would permit us to walk around the pond but not to play badminton.

Lowering the level of the pond would, in theory, reduce the water table and hopefully alleviate the waterlogging, but how easy would it be to lower the pond?

I'm at a disadvantage because I can't see the site, but an interceptor drain at the foot of the slope and before the badminton area would be a simpler option, and one that can be adapted to suit the actual site requirements.

Alternatively, you could take up bog snorkelling!

Hey, I love a man with a sense of humor

I understand the concern about lowering the water table, I like the pond since we can swim in it, so lowering it of 2 foot, even more if we need to is going to make it quite challenging to dive into it

not to mention the look of this hole with some water way below.

I will look into your suggestion of an interceptor at the foot of the hill. Now there is a ditch that runs along between the hill and the flat area, but it hasnt been taken care of and is overgrown, I imagine if I clean it well, it would help as well, I could maybe even use it as a channel to receive the water from the interceptor and to flow it away.

By the way, you are so so kind to have this website on with all the info and to reply to people s question like that. I am impressed and very grateful. You guys rock...

I will read on interceptor and I will probably come back to you for a few questions if thats allright.
