I have done other diy jobs, and thinking of tackling an old ceramic type gulley/hopper that is broken. It's about 150mm square and is only used for collecting the rainwater from the downpipe.
My main questions are :
1. how would i fit a new plastic one to the existing pottery type pipe (assuming that it's not broken)?
2. what material is used to fill the hole to support the fitting prior to replacing the block paving?
3. if the pipe is broken is there an easy remedy, or will it mean digging up the pipe also?

It depends what sort of gulley you have - I have come across different types/construction. Some are all one-piece where others have a two section top/hopper and bottom trap section. These would be the easiest to replace with either a new clay hopper or just whack on a cheap plastic hopper.
If it's all all-in one p trap, then it's a dig out and replace job. You'd be better to fit a plastic bottle gulley IMO, using an AC4000 plastic to clay adaptor and a bit of 100mm pipe as required.
Hope this helps.

also you generally bed gullys into lean mix concrete, and be very careful cutting the clay pipe back they have a tendancy to break if they have been haunched, with concrete,i normally use a stihl saw with a diamond blade for this 13" blade
hope this helps

lean mix is about 1:10-12 cement to ballast ratio ,with very little water,it is ideal for edgings and haunching as it is very stiff but can be tapped down
