I have recently laid a new turf lawn in our back garden but have had to take up part of it as it is holding water.

I decided to dig a soakaway (after viewing this site) which was about 5ft deep when I gave up as I was just digging clay. So I filled the whole i'd dug with some old bricks and this is now full of water thanks to a recent downpour. I have now decided to dig a trench from the soakaway to the border of the garden as the land there seems to absorb water pretty well (there is a bush their and two tree stumps). I will line this trench with mill waste and then put in a perforated land drainage pipe.

Is this the right thing to do?

The pipe has holes on both sides - which way up should the wholes be? - both top and bottom?

Should I dig a further trench to the bottom of my garden so that all the water is not running into one area?

Please help as I am a relative DIY novice!!

You clearly need to do a lot more reading (it's a lot easier than digging (w)holes and filling them in again.

The answers to all your questions are on the site if you look.
