hiya, my first post so please bear with me!
have lived in current property for 8 years, very dry cellar, never had any problems.
however, now have water coming in to cellar, and have noticed roots appearing along cellar wall.
have a privet hedge at front and a tree on pavement.
water authority have been round and done tests etc, and have confirmed that it is not from any of their drains etc.
any help and info would be appreciated , thanks
btw, have contacted insurers who have inspected but they say this is not covered by them as it is a gradual process.

Insurance companies will try every excuse in the book to get out of paying up. Most policies cover damage to drains, and subsidence (though it doesn't sound like you have any structural damage as yet - and that would usually cost you a £1000 excess).
A good drain surveyor will have tracers that he can put down the drains to find out if it is drain water or surface water.
If you can get a root over 1/8 inch in diameter you can get it analysed to find out what sort of tree it is from. If the tree in the road belongs to the council, get them involved and write to them telling you will hold them responsible for any damage caused.
