Hi - I'm new to this so please bear with me on this, I have recently dug out my garden in readiness to prepare for sub-base , however when I removed the soil to the required depth I have notice that there is a drain running horizontailly across my proposed blockpaved driveway.
Although it is 10 inches below the final top surface I was wondering is there anything that I should be protecting the drain with as I'm unsure it I can simply put the sub-base directly onto the drain and then use a wacker plate to level.
My concern is I may damage the existing pot drainage pipe, and cause me unnecessary work, should I be covering the drain beforehand with some sort of Cover / Support ?
I'm sure many of you have come up against this issue, and you help and advice would be really appreciated as it's the first hurdle and is holding up work on my project
Many Thanks

Hi G,
Well im in the middle of building an extension and a drain runs through the new building. Building reg state that any drain subject to weight is en-cased in 6" of concrete.
What that means is 6" either side and also 6" above. That should protect the drain from the heaviest weight you are litely to encounter.
Regards,
Mick

As Mick suggested, encase it in concrete. There's a cross-section drawing here
This is an alternative strategy...

Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
Since the clay drainer is 25 foot long and already has concrete supports in place my questions are:-
1/ Do I need to use compression board anywhere ,
2/ Can I simply surround with 6" covering of concrete onto the drains.
3/ Finally I need to cut the couplingneck of one piece of the 100mm clay (salt glazed) pipe
{as when I dug out to exposure the pipe work, it seems there was a very soft area which was due to a cracked neck on the coupler, when the soil was removed the broken clay dropped out ( at least I now know where that bad smell was coming from during summer)}
Since the pipes are part concreted in to the ground replacing the whole lot is not an option so I need to cut the clay pipe and use some sort of a coupling unit for clay > clay (100mm-100mm Coupling I think
A Quick Reply would really be great as I need to do this work today - Thursday 3rd Nov
Thanks

Guys
I have corrected the clay pipe issue , I cut part way thru the damaged pipe and used a Clay Pipe > Clay Pipe insert (High Pressured Joint made by Marley..... had the inspection chamber lid off and checked both the repair and the flow into the inspection chamber all looks good, just need the Rain to hold off for a day .... Fat Chance.
Having dug out a little too much soil, I need to replace this void under which the pipe run , I would have a thick aggregate would be ok,
1/ Can someone please confirm what I need to put under the clay pipes before I go ahead and run in a 6'inch sqaure around the pipework.
2/ Do I need to some form of compression board near the joints ? in so where would I place them ...
or can I just shutter the concrete around the pipe ?
3/ Finally - do I need to cover the fresh concrete with plastic sheeting or anything until it sets ?
Thanks

Tony
Hope your young'en is ok,
I just went a head and poured in 6" concrete around the existing clay pipe work , didn't use any compressed board.
Do you know the best way to set out the falls on my driveway.
Basically the driveway slopes towards the house , I presently have a water drain/grid at the bottom of the drive nearest the house/garage.
But since I've also dug out the front garden as well I will need to create a fall from left to right across 5m frontal of the house.
What is the best way to plan and prepare a driveway/parking area that needs 3 falls ?
Is there any equipment that will assist me as I'm unsure.
Thanks
G.

Could you use a linear channel drain along the frontage?
