I need to replace my patio and drop the level so its under the DPC. We've been told that we need to install 2 manholes where the drains change direction under the patio. At present there are smaller access panels/roding points (not sure which) in these locations. We believe the drains were updated sometime in the last 10 years but that they didn't inform building regs and therefore we don't know if the present access is sufficent.

Do I really need to install Manholes? or will the existing type of access suffice.

Again, without seeing the site, it's very difficult to comment.

Access points (rather than manholes) are required at every change of direction. On a residential patio, it's quite likely that a 225-300mm Access Chamnber would be adequate, or, if you have a number of connection joining up, then a 450mm Inspection Chamber. Manholes are generally at least 600mm in diameter and much bigger/deeper than ACs and ICs.
