Check the depth of any manholes, access chambers, inspection chambers.
The depth of the pipe is referred to as Invert Level (IL - see main website for a fuller, more accurate definition) and if you know two MHs or ICs are adjacent on a line of pipes then, in theory the pipeline between the MHs will be a straight line and a flat bone, which means that, if you were to plot the position of the MHs (ICs or ACs or whatever there is) on a plan of the site, the pipes would run directly from one to the next, and if you plotted a cross-setion, again, the pipes between two adjecent MHs would be a straight line (albeit one viewed side-on, IYKWIM)
Does that help?

What you need is a sonar drain tracer, any drainman worth his salt will have one as standard kit.
Basically it is a device you push down the drain/sewer and it transmits a signal up to ground level, the signal is then picked up with a reciever box and you mark/peg the ground as you go, you can also work out the depth at any given point.
Cost - £45/£65
What it doesnt tell you is the condition of the drain or if there are any branch lines/junctions entering the run, for that you need a CCTV Drain Survey.
A little camera that you push down the drain/sewer while you watch in glorious technicolor, should you wish!(there are things in life that you really dont need to see in colour)
Cost £90/£150
It depends what you want and the size of the job in hand (little trade joke thrown in for free)
If i were you i would ring around and ask the cost of each item individually, then ask what discount you get for having both done at the same time, Then tell them that you dont want the all singing, all dancing video & report with bells on that usually follows a CCTV Drain Survey and as you are saving them an hours office work collating the report can you have a bit more discount. you might get the lot for about £120.
For both you will need an access point MH/chamber, rodding eye into the system or you will incur extra cost.
