Hi,

Hope you can help me. We built a new house last year on a gentle slope from back of house running down to front approx 2' and slightly to left of house. My problem is this we needed to cut into the slope for the building works - Now at the back corner of the house where I want to put a patio there is a very heavy wet soil which the builder dug out below the level of the rest of the site. The drainage that is in position at the moment is not really getting to this part of the site as the water would need to run uphill !!. I do need to raise the level of this piece in order to have the patio level with the house anyway. My question is this.

If I raise the ground level and add a new (higher) drain to join onto the existing drain will this take away the water or will it just remain underneath at the level it is at currently. There is a constant trickle of water coming from the higher ground at the back into this area also. Hope this makes sense ??

The one thing that is certain is that water will not run uphill. You could install some land drainage into the proposed patio area andconnect it to the existing drainage - this will allow any excess water to be drained away, but won't reduce the water level.

If the waterlogged ground is a problem, you could dig it out and replace it with a free-draining ballast, incorporating the land drainage as part of the work. This won't reduce the level of the groundwater but it should give you a firmer foundation for the eventual patio.
