I know I will scoffed at but I don't fully understand gradients. What exactly does 1:80 mean. By that I mean what depth do i need to go down for every metre of pipe.

1:80 means that for every 80 metres of pipe you need to go down 1 metre.
So for every 8 metres of pipe you have to go down 100mm.

Hey guys thanks alot to the pair of you for your help. Now I get is, kinda got it before but didn't know which number refered to length and which refered to fall.

I think you'd find it obvious if your drive went down 80m for every 1m horizontally.
