Is there a shortage of drainage contractors? Our parish council want a park draining, but I was talking to a councillor and he was saying they had only got one quote, and had to have two or more to continue with the work. I was quite suprised, as all you need is a JCB, some pipe, a bit of terram and some pea shingle. Perhaps I should do it myself at the weekend?

There is a 'shortage' of drainage contractors, mainly because the demand for their skills is so high, but quite often, the perceived 'shortage' is exaggerated because clients don't know where to look. Generally speaking, the construction industry doesn't rely on advertising: it's word of mouth - who you know, not just what you know, so it's likely that there are a dozen or more groundworkers in your area that could undertake the work, but they probably don't know about it.

If you talk to a local builder, they may know someone, or call in at your local BM or Civils Merchant and ask them for a couple of names. :)
