My first post on s forum,I cant decide what gravel to have on my drive.I had decided on limestone untill i read various posts on here.Just looking for a bit of guidance really, i dont want pea gravel,I like the look of limestone chippings and ive been told they bond together well, but now ive read there too soft.I read one post about yorkshire cream granite but cant find any pictures .I know its down to personel preference and maybe where you live [i'm in essex],but any help about suitable options would be appreciated.

yes i have ,found some good ideas, self binding gravels etc but I would just like to knoe what the experts use.If i didn't come across this site I probably would have gone for limestone [cotswold] but been turned off that now.I am just looking for something that binds well but hard wearing .Granite chippings?
thanks.

As long as it is a hard stone it's mainly an aesthetic choice. Softer stones like cotswold chippings look nice but a) grind down to a paste with traffic and, b) are sufficiently porous that algae grows on it turning it from pristine cream to unsightly green.

Personally, I like 10mm shingle. You can lay it thin and roll it so that it's very firm to walk on and won't migrate and form dunes.

20 mm lea shingle all the way
cheap as chips and looks ok

10 mm gets stuck in the treads of cars and soles of boots

What's 20mm Lea shingle?
Is it ordinary shingle like 10mm pea shingle but only bigger?

Thanks for the advice ,think i'll go for silver/grey granite chippings.I will look at 20mm pea shingle but fancied something a bit different.

Bob A, I pretty sure that 20mm lea shingle is a typo of 20mm "pea shingle", however if I'm wrong, I am sure Mr Lout will correct me, so to answer you other question, yes it is slightly larger version of 10mm pea shingle.

no typo mikey

"lea" shingle is what the suppliers often call it

as in river lea

i like it because it has less propensity to scatter about

cheers LLL :)
