I need to dry out the cellar. I have looked at full tanking but this is expensive - I live on a sandstone hill so am I right in thinking that some kind of drainage would suffice ?

Drainage might help, but it's really not possible to say what would be the best approach when you're not familiar with the site. Generally speaking, a vertical drainage composite is cheaper than tanking, but that has to be applied to the external face of the cellar walls.

I think your best bet is to get a local buiklder or cellar/basement specialist to take a no-obligation look around and see what they recommend.
