I've been laying Indian sandstone recently and it's time to point. There's sharp sand left over, I'd say most joints are between 10-15mm. I know building sand is recommended but would there be any negative consequences of using the remaining sharp sand?

I honestly don't know if it's river washed, it's the excess from a bulk bag.

Usually, there's no real structural issue in using a grit/sharp sand as the base for a pointing mortar - it gives a rougher, grittier finish, that's all, and if that's OK to you and/or your client, then there isn't any real problem.
